Transportation Info Please

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone could answer a question or 2?

Next summer I will be travelling to Tokyo for Japanese class(the language school is between Takadanobaba Station and Waseda Univer. north of Shinjuku). My grandmother would like me to stay at her old house in Hachiouji(Hachiman-cho to be exact). http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q%26amp;source=s_q%26amp;hl=en%26amp;geocode=%26amp;q=hachimancho,+tokyo%26amp;sll=35.67819,139.515332%26amp;sspn=0,359.428711%26amp;date=2%2F27%2F09%26amp;time=5:03pm%26amp;ttype=dep%26amp;noexp=0%26amp;noal=0%26amp;sort=time%26amp;tline=%26amp;ie=UTF8%26amp;ll=35.660513,139.32783%26amp;spn=0.003042,0.004463%26amp;z=17

However the distance between Hachiouji and Tokyo is 20 miles.

By JR train I hypothesize that it will cost $20 a day. I would like to keep costs low. Actually there is a cheap hostel down the street near the school for $12 a night. But I have to visit family.

Would anyone know of cheaper transportation or the right train pass to use?

Thank You

Transportation Info Please

It%26#39;ll take about an hour to Takanobaba from Hachioji.

Regular fare is 620 yen one way on the JR. There are several options, but if you catch an express, it%26#39;s only 4 stops to Shinjuku, transfer to the Yamanote line -- 2 stops to Takadanobaba.

The most cost efficient way to travel to get a train pass from Hachioji to Takadanobaba (or wherever your final destination will be every day).

For example, a normal pass is 18,580 yen for one month, 52,970 yen for 3 months or 89,210 yen for 6 months. As a student (if you%26#39;re going to an ';authorized/legal'; school), you%26#39;ll be able to purchase a student pass which will be significantly cheaper.

Grandmas are precious. Do enjoy your moments with her. She%26#39;ll appreciate it. And in time, you will, too.

Here%26#39;s a site that will help with your train travels.

Just type in where you starting from and your destination, and it%26#39;ll come up with various options.

That is a long commute--takes over an hour one way. But I suppose your bachan (grandma) will give you free meals and you can keep costs low that way?

If you%26#39;re going to stay over a month, you%26#39;ll be able to get a student commuter pass. It should slash the cost up to 50%. You%26#39;ll need a student ID from your school.

You can purchase a commuter or student monthly pass for a reasonable price in case the language course continues more than a month.

Between Hachioji and Takadanobaba on JR

Commuter pass / 1 month: 18,580 yen

Student pass (If you%26#39;re granted for this.) / 1 month: 8,820 yen

Hachioji - Takadanobaba JR normal return fare:

1,240 yen

Thank you so much! :)

There would also be bulk purchase discounts available, 11 tickets for the price of 10, something like that.

Im staying for 2 months so I can hopefully get 2 1month passes. Im planning to get an international student ID too.

This is great info. Thanks.

I responded to your thread in another forum. But in case you missed it, language school students generally cannot get student discounts on JR East trains. On JR East, usually it is reserved for grade school and university students, leaving a gap in terms of language school/technical students. Any case you still save money by getting the commuter pass even if it is the full adult priced one.

Also, if you are looking to squeeze out as much money, taking the Keio Line to Shinjuku then changing at Shinjuku to the JR line is a little cheaper, however the transfer is a bit longer.

Either case, both lines JR and Keio going into Tokyo in the morning rush hours is a pain. But you%26#39;ll be living in Tokyo for the experience right.

wow what a coinkidink.

yes, morning rushhour will be a pain.

do I purchase the pass at the JR station or reserve it out of Japan and pick it up at the Narita airport?
