Too cold is relative so it depends on your own tolerance. Late February should see temperatures around 0 to 5 degrees but it will be colder up at Lake Chuzenji. Given that you have a car so you don%26#39;t have to wait at bus stops or walk around as much, you avoid much of the exposure. Dress warm with fleece or down coats, gloves, hats, etc and you should be fine.

Remember to check the extended forecast a few days before your departure. You may have to deal with driving in snow.

We went to Nikko 31 March, 2008 it was very cold yet sunny and the following day it snowed...

I had plans to go to Nikko next weekend, but looking at the weather forecast (Snow, max 30 deg) am now unsure.

Given this forecast, what is the general opinion here as to weather it is still worth going up there for the day.

Cheers.

By car? Keep in mind that driving conditions might change with altitude. Consider taking the train to Nikko, then a taxi to the shrines, and the bus to Lake Chuzenji.

I went once in the winter. It was serene (parts can get crowded in other seasons). My colleagues were surprised it was open.

Aside from being cold, Nikko and Lake Chuzenji are areas worth visiting for sure. If you don%26#39;t want to drive, take the Tobu train (unless you have a JR Pass, then take a JR train) to Tobu Nikko Station. From there, you can catch the bus to the World Heritage Sites and another bus later on up to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls.

Japan is having awarm winter this yr, hecne Nikko prscticaslly have no now and temp hovering around 8 to 10 C when I was there on 14.2.09.

However, it was nice walking around in cool but sunny weather at the same time.
