Hi- We are heading to Tokyo to shop for the latest in Japanese fashion. Where would be a great, central UPSCALE, Western hotel to stay in that we could walk out of the hotel into one of the key shopping areas. THANKS~~

Fashion Shopping- Where to Stay??

sockster,

I’m not a fashion expert, but often went to Harajuku and Shibuya when I wanted to see the latest in Japanese fashion. The stores in Harajuku/Shibuya are nice, but many of them are pretty casual, in my opinion. When I wanted to see/buy something more upscale, I went to Roppongi, Aoyama/Omotesando, Ginza, etc. Recently, I shop mostly in New York City (instead of Tokyo) because Japanese yen is so strong.

If you are interested in staying at upscale Western hotel in the central area, you may want to check out Grand Hyatt or Ritz-Carlton. Then, you can visit some nice shops in Roppongi Hills. Please see

Or, you may stay at Cerulean Tower and go shopping in Shibuya. See

If you are interested in shopping in Ginza, you may stay at Peninsula. See

If you are looking for Japanese designers, then Aoyama is the place to go. Specially, the area known as ';Miyuki Dori:, which is street that extends past Aoyama Dori from Omotesando towards the Nezu Museum.

You will find the flagship shops of Issey Miyake, Comme De Garcons, Yohji Yamamoto, BAPE, and others here. Even with the high yen, prices are lower than the shops in Manhattan. There is also more variety and the newest stuff.

For younger fashion, ';Ura Harajuku,'; at the opposite end of Omotesando is the place to go. You will find the mania sneaker shops and guerilla fashions shops there.

';Porter,'; the Japanese bag brand, has a flagship located behind Tokyo Union Church on Omotesando. Worth a visit.

Definitely do not miss Omotesando Hills shopping center. Its mostly little known or small Japanese brands in a spectacular Tadao Ando designed building. ';Amadana';, design electronics and home goods is my favorite.

Department stores will have subsets of all these brands. I would recommend going to Isetan in Shinjuku for a mind blowing shopping experience. I also like Seibu in Shibuya as well.

Ginza is a great not-to-be-missed experience. Its mostly global brands, however. There is a great Muji located near Yurakucho. I like the Cardinal Pub located in the Sony Bldg for a break - the beer is the coldest!

Also try walking down Naka Dori in Marunouchi to the Marunouchi and ShinMarunouchi Buildings. Both have a pretty eclectic variety of shops, many Japanese brands and also good F%26amp;B. The Peninsula is the place to stay for Ginza and Marunouchi. This is currently Tokyo%26#39;s best hotel.

There is a site called Superfuture that publishes detailed maps of all these shops, but it can be hard to read.

There really are not any luxury hotels in the immediate Aoyama area. I agree with the suggestion of Roppongi Hills (Hyatt) or Roppongi Midtown (RC) for luxury, plus both have upscale shopping attached. There is also Tokyo Stay Aoyama Premier (walking distance to Aoyama) and Hotel Cerulean at Shibuya.

Maybe we will see the JPY move back toward 100, make shopping better.

If fashion is what your looking for - mid age to young - shibuya is the place - department store - floors and floors and floors of all fashion. Clothes, clothes and clothes.

Not too sure why the Shibuya Excel hotel (located adjacent to jr train station)prices went way up. But I believe Cerulean is one of the nicest hotels in the Shibuya area. Personally I really liked the Aoyama district very lovely. nostaligic. (only a couple of stations away from shibuya. As for Ginza they have three top scale department stores - the stopping there is very pricey.
