Flights and car hire

We are spending 4 days in Hokkaido as part of our trip to Japan. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on a previous post. We are no planning to spend 2 nights in Furano and then 2 nights in Sapporo. We will be flying in from Osaka. I have a few questions:

1. Will we need a car for the 2 days in Sapporo?

2. Would it be better to fly from Osaka to Asahikawa as there appears to be a direct flight?

3. Can we hire a car at Asahiokawa and drive to Furano and then drop the car back off in Sapporo?

4. Would it be better to fly in and out of Sapporo Chitose and keep the car for the 4 days?

Thanking everyone in advance.

Eric

Flights and car hire

1. Within Sapporo, you don%26#39;t need a car. Most of what is interesting is either within walking distance, or you can rely on the subway or bus network.

2. It should be the correct way to go because then if you pick up a car, you don%26#39;t have to backtrack to return it to its original location.

3. Yes

4. Depends on your itinerary. However, if you stay at Sapporo and have your car at the same time, you%26#39;d add unnecessary expense with car rental charges (around 4,000+ Yen per day) and parking within the city (around 1,000 Yen per day). Therefore, don%26#39;t pick up the car until you need to and return it as early as possible to save money.

You can rent acar at Asahikawa Airport.

Or you can go by train to Furano - easy, there are many trains - and rent a car there.

If you go in the summer season there are public transport services trains/buses in the Furano and Biei area - but with only 2 days i%26#39;d rent a car.

Thanks Amanda. Is it easy to get train from furano back to sapporo or should we drop the car off in sapporo. It doesn%26#39;t seem that easy to pick up a car in one location and drop off on another.
