Public pay phones?

Are there public pay phones for use in Tokyo or is everything a cell phone these days? I plan on making a couple of phone calls or various people I am trying to meet up with once I get to Japan but if I can use pay phones then i don%26#39;t think a rental would be needed on a cell.

Public pay phones?

Yeah, pay phones are still around, but disappearing.

You need a telephone card to use a pay phone - I don%26#39;t even know where those are sold anymore.

There is alway skype.....

Public pay phones?

Yes there are payphones, and yes you can use cash, most phones can take 10yen or 100yen coins, but be aware if you enter 100yen but use less then 100yen you won%26#39;t get any change, so better to go with 10yen.

If you wanted a phone card, they are sold at all combinis and usually near the phones itself theres a small dispenser (sometimes) or just use cash as mentioned.

I just used one the other day since my mobile phone battery died and I had to make a phone call.

Usually you can find them inside or near major stations etc.

Here%26#39;s a little more information on phones:

You can also find public pay phones somewhere near the lobby area of many hotels. Actually, calling from your hotel room itself is a lot easier than using a pay phone, if you ask me. I find Japanese pay phones to be a little intimidating. A very nice fact is that unlike the totally outrageous costs many hotels in the U.S. charge for calls placed from your room, in Japan hotels don%26#39;t normally rip you off for this. It is very cheap, as well as easy, to place domestic calls from the comfort of your own room. (But my experience is based on inexpensive hotels, mainly business hotels. If you are staying at better-class hotels you%26#39;d better ask first.)

calling from hotel room is probably cheaper than using a pay phone. At least that%26#39;s my experience with the hotels (2-5 stars) I stayed at.

Pay phones are still all over the place, particularly in rail stations and shopping malls.

I wouldn%26#39;t say they are all over the place like they were 20 years ago. Many have been pulled out so you have to go to busy areas, hotels, stations or shopping areas to find them. There used to be green phones on every block in some parts of central Tokyo at one time. It%26#39;s a little tougher to find them now but they can be found.
