Hi there, I%26#39;m traveling to Japan with my wife and 2 year old boy in May and would like to rent a house for a week or two on the coast. Doesn%26#39;t really matter where. Surf would be nice but not essential. Does anyone have any ideas? Big thanks.

I recommend Choshi in Chiba. It is not far from Tokyo and Narita. It is calm village but has beaches, onsen and some hotels. I tried to find english homepage about the place but not possible.
Try to input Choshi at portal site.
Let me give you some websites abuot the town.

I have not seen anything quite like the bustling Bondi or Manly beaches still close to a big city in Japan. It depends on what you like to do in other times than beach water playing/sun bathing. Also there may be people on the beach in some warm days in May but most wouldn%26#39;t go swimming until July/August.
The easy access from Tokyo and popular beach is the Shonan Kaigan in Kamakura, Kanagawa.
You may have better luck trying to find minshuku(B%26amp;B like family run room rental).

Many places are close to beaches all over Japan, some in Kanagawa, too.
Here%26#39;s an alternative, just to get you looking at a different area:

Near Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula south of Tokyo and adjacent to Shirahama Beach. The website shows surf and surf boards at the beach. We haven%26#39;t stayed so can%26#39;t comment specifically ourselves, but there are reviews on the Shimoda site in TA. We have been to Shimoda and Shirahama Beach. Shimoda is a historic port city, and Shirahama beach can be spectacular.
Thanks for all the great ideas. We%26#39;re not that hung up on a swimming kind of beach experience, just something in contrast to the excitement of Tokyo. Even a beautiful, far off fishing village could be an idea... anywhere different and unexpected for Australians traveling to Japan. Thanks again.
