Asakusa

Hello!

I am visiting Tokyo for the first time in April and I wondered if Asakusa is a good place to stay. It seems a little way from central Tokyo but offers good value accommodation. Are there any bars for a late night drink in the area?

Thank you

Asakusa

Its the old part of town, not really central anymore. There are some popular tourist attractions there - Ueno Park, Asakusa Kaminarimon, Sensoji Temple, etc. Its not my cup of tea, but there are many who like the old fashioned atmosphere.

Its convenient to the Keisei Skyliner from NRT, so decent access to the airport.

If you are looking for late night bars, etc, better to stay closer to Roppongi. Much more fun at night.

Asakusa

Asakusa has nice old Japanese atmosphere and offers many low cost accommodations, but it%26#39;s not very convenient for sightseeing. There are many bars that are open till late in the area between Sensoji Temple and the Asakusa View Hotel.

Keep in mind that Asakusa gets severely packed during the hanami season (the 1st week of April.) The whole area around Asakusa subway station will look like Shinjuku Station in rush hour!

Asakusa is a a relatively quiet area at night. If you want a happening scene, try Roppongi, Shinjuku or Shibuya.

Ueno is a little more expensive but much more convenient because of the JR lines and subway lines in the area.

We stayed in Asakusa in October and I really liked it. There are late night bars and restaurants in the area but are fairly low key. We went to Roppongi one night and got caught out by the early closure of the public transport system. The taxi cost back to our hotel was astronomical and not something we could have done frequently. I would suggest that you decide what kind of nightlife you are wanting and whether you will want it every night you are there. The savings on the relatively low cost of accomodation in Asakusa may end up being spent on taxis!
