Comments on my Hokkaido itinerary pleaseHi there,
It seems quite a packed schedule! Firstly, I don%26#39;t think you need a car for the first 2 days at least- Sapporo and Otaru are easily seen by subway, train and bus. Your first day, I think you will struggle to get to the outlet mall Rera if you want to see Otaru and chocolate factory. The clocktower will take you about 2mins to see (unless you want to see the small museum inside?) and you can combine it with the Sapporo tower as they are very close to each other.
The day when you travel from Sapporo to Shikotsuko and onto Noboribetsu, should be fine, though probably a fairly long drive (its a scenic route afterall). Seems fine.
I wouldn%26#39;t expect to see any whales when you go to Chiyaku cape, maybe dolphins if you%26#39;re lucky, from the bridge I doubt it unless you%26#39;re very lucky (they have dolphin watching cruises you can go on if you really want to see something, but they are about 3 hours in the bay).
The cherry blossoms will be gone in Goryaku park in Hakodate by early June. And I think the drive from Hakodate back to Sapporo may take you more than 3 hours even on the express way. I hope you rest up before the next days trip north!
Furano and Biei- you are too early to see the lavender or many of the other flowers. The scenery is nice, but maybe you can substitute this part by visiting the Zoo in Asahikawa, spending a couple of days in the national park or resting up instead. There should be information on places to stay in Furano/Biei and Sounkyo on this forum if you look at some previous posts.
The mountains in the national park will still be pretty snowy in early June, so unless you%26#39;re experienced I think hiking is not really an option. Sounkyo has the waterfalls to look at and the gorge to drive along, so you could easily do this in one day from Asahikawa. Its a long drive back to Sapporo (4-5hours from there) so I think you could swap the last 2 days in Hokkaido around, since the shopping mall is very close to the airport and you%26#39;ll probably be tired from the travelling around.
Read through some of the previous posts on the areas you%26#39;re looking at, I think you can probably change your schedule a bit to give you some more free time to enjoy the scenery more.

Comments on my Hokkaido itinerary pleaseDear Sapporolite
Many thanks for your helpful advice. Will take note of your suggestions.

1. Sapporo Attractions
I don%26#39;t see the Old Hokkaido Government Building (Akarenga) on your plans? The building is very close to JR Sapporo and it%26#39;s one of the most picturesque spots in the city, much more so than the overrated Clock Tower. The Clock Tower is good for two pictures and that%26#39;s about it.
Ramen Alley: ok but there really isn%26#39;t anything to see other than a bunch of noodle shops in an alley. The same (and sometimes better) noodle shops are all over the city so I wouldn%26#39;t count this as an attraction. Just outside, Susukino at night is much more happening and interesting.
One spot worth visiting is Nakajima Koen (or Park). It is one stop south of Susukino and it%26#39;s a very nice park with a lake and some interesting art sculptures. It should be very nice to walk around this area in June.
100 Yen shops are ok but they all look the same after a while selling cheap stuff. Go to the Donki Shop between Odori and Susukino Station. The merchandise there is much more interesting. It is also the perfect place for night shopping since it%26#39;s open until 5am.
www.donki.com/c/shop/shop_en.php…
Ishiya Chocolate Factory: the tour is not worth it. The assembly line you get to see is not interesting at all. I have been to much better tours with Cadbury. However, the park and the souvenir shop are nicely decorated and worth quite a few photos.
Tanukikoji: go to a shop at 6-chome right next to Dormy Inn Annex to buy souvenirs. This is the cheapest outlet that sells Ishiya Chocolate and others, tax free with an additional discount.
Rera Outlet: since your flight leaves so early in the morning, you might as well stay near Chitose the night before and go to Rera outlet then. The outlet is just one stop from the airport anyway. You get to save some train costs as well as time.
2. Furano/Biei
Biei should look very good even by early June. With a car, you can visit both Patchwork Road and Panorama Road in 1/2 day. There are various lavender farms and public parks with flowers. Aside from Farm Tomita, Hinode Park is a very popular park for scenic viewing.
3. Transport
As suggested, you don%26#39;t need rental car for Sapporo or Otaru. Sapporo is mostly walkable and has good public transportation. Otaru is entirely walkable.
Hi Sammyfloyd
I am very grateful for your very helpful recommendations esp. the shopping centres and what to do at Furano/Biei . I will rework my schedule accordingly.
Your suggestion to stay near Chitose the night before I leave is good. Can you advise me whether there is a train station near the Chitose Rera? I will be picking up and returning the car at Sapporo. How do I get from Sapporo to Chitose Rera, then to the airport?
Thanks once again for your great help!
Hwee
Hi again,
Yes there is a train station right next to the chitose rera shopping.
Its the Chitose stop, the one before the airport.

Hi Sammyfloyd
Appreciate your great help. I can now book my hotels.
Grateful thanks!
