Are there many ';Cirrus'; ATMs in Japan?

I have an Australian Westpac ATM card that I am hopng to use in Japan to withdraw cash. Having read many of the questions / answers regarding ATMs in Japan, my bank could only advise me that my card can be used at any overseas ATM that had a ';Cirrus'; logo.

Are these ATMs easy to find? Does the 7-Eleven ATMs have this logo? Anyone with experience using such ATM cards to withdraw money?

Thanks in anticipation %26amp; look forward to feedback / advice.

Yes, just head to the Post Offices and I think you can withdraw cash from their ATMs.

Just be careful about opening/closing times of post office ATMs if you%26#39;re away from the bigger cities like Tokyo-- many shut at about 5 or 6 pm!

Friends who came to visit in Japan used Commonwealth Bank cards fine at 7-11 ATM. I think they%26#39;re with the Cirrus network, arent they? 7-11 ATMs are 24hr butonly issue 10,000yen notes, nothing smaller (post office ATMs do 10,000 and 1,000yen notes, so any amount you need is OK)

Yes 7-11 atms take them, and there are 7-11 convenience stores everywhere. Their ATMs are open 24/7.

*note that from my experience the minimal withdrawl from 7-11 ATMs for International cards is 10,000yen.

If you need a smaller amount then try post office or Citibank ones.

Also post office ATMs take international cards.

There%26#39;s a search feature here - mastercard.com/us/鈥ndex.html

As previously noted, ATMs are everywhere.

Thanks Dave148 for the link to the ATM search tool.

Why does everyone say there are limited ATM%26#39;s in Japan, there are thousands on that web site?

Thanks this had put my mind at rest knowing that I can get Yen from ATMs, just about everywhere.

Pam

There are thousands but not every ATM belongs to Cirrus like in most other countries. In fact most ATMs in Japan are NOT part of Cirrus or the competing PLUS international network.

Thank you all for your speedy reply %26amp; the reassurance ! If this facility is available, is there any need or benefit with travellers cheques? Are there many places one can cash them?

Thanks again !

Traveller%26#39;s cheques can be cashed in just about any bank. I would advise you bring cheques in JAPANESE YEN, as being in local currency even smaller banks in my experience are happy to cash them.

Please be aware that many bank branches shut at about 3pm.

While possible at major tourist places, if you walked into a local bank branch without much experience with travelers cheques be prepared to wait abit. I never found travelers cheques to be as useful in Japan as cash or cards.

Travelers checks are a waste of time. Japan is safe so carrying a large sum of money is no problem.
