Is JR pass required for kid under 3 years old?

Hi there

I with my family (5 adults with 1 kid) will travel to tokyo next month. Just wonder that a kid under 3 years old (2 years 8 months to be exact). We plan to travel by JR. Do we need to buy JR pass for our kid?

Thank you

Phontong

JR categorizes anyone ages 1-5 as an infant so no ticket is required.

However, if you use any train with a reserved seat, they will need to sit on your lap. Other trains they can sit in the free space.

Hi, Phontong,

You have 5 adults so this doesn%26#39;t apply to you, but just to clarify the ';train ticket'; question for both JR and private lines.

Train tickets

Adult -- 12 years and older (if the 12 year old is still in elementary, he/she is a child)

Child -- 6-11 years (if the 6 year old is still in kindergarten, he/she is a pre-schooler)

Infant/Pre-Schooler -- 1-5 years

Infant - under 1

Infants/preschool: Children who are infants or pre-schoolers can basically ride the trains for free. One adult can bring up to two infants/preschoolers. If there are three or more children, they will need to be accompanied by another adult to ride for free, or pay for a child%26#39;s ticket. All reserved seats will require a child%26#39;s ticket. (Laps are for free.) If an infant/pre-schooler is traveling alone, he/she will need to buy a child%26#39;s ticket.

A child%26#39;s ticket is, generally speaking, half of an adult%26#39;s fare.

Thank you very much to both of you, tokyosubway and mamaqelli.
