Himeji to Mount Koya

Is it feasible to go from Himeji to Mount Koya in a day, or would a stop over in Osaka be required to split up the journey?

Can you be based in Osaka instead of Himeji? In that way you can make day trips to both Himeji and Mt. Koya at a leisurely pace.

A day trip from Himeji to Mt. Koya is feasible, but sounds very hectic.

Take the JR Special Rapid to Osaka (1 hour), change to Osaka Subway Midosuji Line to Namba, then change to Nankai Line to get to Mt. Koya.
