Australian Exchange Rate at Tokyo ATM's from ANZ or Westpac

Have any Aussies been to Japan recently that can tell me if the exchange rate at the Tokyo ATM%26#39;s was better than the exchange rate in Aus. If you used ANZ or Westpac could you please advise as I have accounts with both.

I was going to buy my Yen cash in Aus before leaving but a Travel Agent has told me today that I will get a much better rate at Tokyo ATM%26#39;s.

Has anyone withdrawn Yen from Tokyo ATM%26#39;s in recent times and what rate did your bank charge you.

Counting down now only 4 weeks to go and the Yen has climbed a fraction today, YIPEE, hope it keeps going up.

Thanks

Pam

Yes of course. It%26#39;s how the financial market works. When you use ATM, the money is transferred electronically from your own bank to a Japanese bank. When you get Yen cash, that cash has to be shipped around(may even be all the way from Japan) in armoured vehicles. Clerks have to count all that cash a few times along the way. That%26#39;s not cheap.

ANZ card - ATM Transaction:

23 Feb 20,000JPY cost = $344.82

26 Feb 20,000JPY cost = $330.59

There is a $10 transaction charge included, but can%26#39;t explain the $14 difference outside of change in exchange rates.

With some exceptions, it is always better to exchange at the destination. And even better using ATM cash out or CC transaction purchases, provided that the AUD/JPY doesn%26#39;t drop from now on. It appears trending up slowly for the past month. China move is the key. But again who knows.

Thanks Guys,

We arrive in Japan on 4 April and have fingers and toes crossed hoping the Aussie $ will improve so we can really enjoy ourselves and not watch the pennies or yen all the time.
