Costco in Tokyo?

Should I forget going there because of inconvenient transportation (even on the subway). Thanks.

Costco in Tokyo?

Not sure why you would visit Costco in Tokyo. You would have to join I presume and it is not that convenient to get too (we drive to Kawasaki outlet). Most purchases are %26#39;bulk%26#39;.

What would you want to buy ?

Costco in Tokyo?

Hi,

Yes, we are members. We go to Costco here every week to shop. Nothing special to buy there, just want to visit a Costco in Asia to see what it is like. I am pretty sure they have different brands there. Do they carry Costco store brand ~ Kirkland? So I guess can%26#39;t take the subway there.

All the Costco%26#39;s are located in the suburbs. No subways. Almost everyone goes by car as everything is sold in bulk. But, I have a friend who goes by train and carries a backpack! The closest one to a train station is the one in Tamasakai.

Yes, they have Kirkland. Plus, local brands, such as Scottie and Kleenex toilet paper in bulk packaging. Costco is the place to go if you want burrito size tortilla and cheese sold in 1 kg bags. With the price of cheese going up, they%26#39;ve made smaller packages at our local supermarket -- only 150g (for the same price as the old 250g! lol) Costco is also the place to go if you want HUGE furniture that won%26#39;t fit into an average Japanese home -- beats me what their marketing plan was, but it%26#39;s fun to sit and dream for a bit.

Alone-san, if you decide to go to Tamasakai, you could stop by the Sports Authority at Tama Center to look for the gas for your camp stove! Tama Center is on the way to Tama Sakai on the Keio Line from Shinjuku. Take the train going to Hashimoto. http://www.keio.co.jp/english/index.html

Cheers!

Thanks for the info. I went to Costco in Taiwan once, they carried very interesting items that I can%26#39;t buy in the states.

The closest Costco to central Tokyo is at Kawasaki. It may be the newest too, although I understand there is another opening in Hokkaido. There is another one at Makuhari, thats not far from the Higashi Kanto Expressway, that leads to Narita Airport. The shops are mostly in industrial areas with limited public transportation. I do see many local people going by bicycle.

I can%26#39;t say that Costco would have much appeal to a visitor, unless you are a Costco freak - then, its a mecca .

For residents, its an awesome godsend. US meat, bagels, wine, seafood, berrys, cheese, chips, razorblades, US magazines, booze, all the essentials of life.

They sell sushi in Japan, but its pretty basic - made by machine. But good a mass sustenance for big families.

My biggest beef (pun intended) is that Costco does not quickly adjust prices lower to reflect the stronger yen, but seems to raise prices when the yen is weaker.

It pains me to say this, but Costco probably has the best pizza in Japan at a great price for a full pie, 1,500 yen.

Thank you Costco! Please don%26#39;t go out of business! Expand wildly across Japan!!

Here are detailed directions to Tamasakai Costco by train, including directions from the nearby train station:

I went there two years ago and enjoyed a nice pizza dinner in the food court.

Same question answered(by me) on here before. Train to Kawasaki station then city bus, that%26#39;s the one I went to. I listed couple locations, including one with shuttle bus connecting the nearest train station. I%26#39;ll have to search on here to see the details, so may as well you do the search.

Why you want to go? because as mentioned, they sell stuff no found in North America. Should you go there if it%26#39;s your first time in Japan and you are not staying for several weeks? Probably not.

And yes, the sushi was pretty crappy (though inexpensive), but still better than many restaurants in North America.

I just put up a gallery of some things in Kawasaki including the Costco which is right next door to the main fire station and directly across the street from the main police station. See:

There are two bus stops near the Costco. If you decide to go, let me know and I%26#39;ll direct you to the correct one, which will save you about 20 minutes on the bus.
