Hi, this might seem like a silly question, but how safe is Tokyo, particularly at night? I will be travelling alone most of the time, so was just wondering how prevalent eg pick pocketing is on public transport or how safe it is to have your camera visible to take night photos?
Any help / advice / suggstions very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Safety in Tokyo
Tokyo is a pretty safe city. Always be aware of what is going on around you. As in any other large metropolitan area, common sense prevails.
Safety in Tokyo
Tokyo for the most part is a VERY safe city. I often see people with giant wallets sticking out of their pockets that would never happen in other countries. People opening walk with cameras and stores often leave things out without supervision, there is *usually no fear that it will be stolen.
However that doesn%26#39;t mean don%26#39;t leave common sense at the door, obviously being in a situation where you%26#39;re in a bar area with drunk people etc. But thats the same for any place. For the most part its very safe.
Its very safe. There is no violent street crime, muggings, or drug dealing.
There are ocassional pickpockets that I have heard about in large busy stations, but never have known anyone to actually have a problem.
Stalkers can be a problem for females on ocassion, and I do know a few people who have had problems with that, but they are all long term residents.
Females do have to watch out for themselves to make sure they don%26#39;t get unnecessary attention, whether on crowded trains or in a dark alley. If you use your common sense and look alert, you should be fine. Violent crimes are rare.
As everyone says, extremely safe. Pickpockets can be a problem in crowded stations but you just have to be smart and you should not have a problem.
What sort of night photos are you talking about? If you%26#39;re in a love hotel district and taking pictures of couples going in and out you%26#39;re probably going to have trouble. If you%26#39;re just out taking photos (not of people) then there is no problem at all, except for using flash on a train platform at night into a driver%26#39;s eye.
I was going to point out the three things that frequently get stolen in Japan:
1, Bicycles
2. Unbrellas, particularly on rainy days
3. Shoes (sometimes)
Thanks for all your help, that makes me feel much better. I am used to London so ok with big cities, just wanted a bit of a better idea for Tokyo. Night pictures I was thinking more neon signs and views over the city, not people up to who knows what lol, so should be ok!
Thanks again, I can%26#39;t wait to go!
:0)
Safe???
Tokyo???japan???
Are you talking about 20 years ago?
I know what you mean by saying safe, correctly, safer than other large cities. While it%26#39;s rare to see violence involving firearms and things, but they are there.
Another thing you should not forget is that Japanese are one crazy people. A lot of psycho or mentally twisted morons so, don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s safe place! A lot of violence and criminal activities. Never seen drug dealing? You%26#39;ve got be kidding. They re just more sneaky. They are there. Thing about here is that everything is bit sneaky, hidden, not surfaced, unrevealed.
The main safety concern for visitors is violent crime, robbery, mugging and battery where the tourist is going to be a victim. None of those pose an even insignificant threat to the average tourist. The only thing I caution people to be careful of is pickpockets in crowded areas. That%26#39;s easily defended against by using a little intelligence and foresight.
I must add that I know of some who have had horrible experiences in Tokyo, having their drinks drugged in a bar, waking up with no money left, credit cards had been ';swiped';, and having no recollection about what had happened. So while yes, compared to many other large cities around the world, Tokyo is safe, but do NOT let that be a false sense of security.
