Yudanaka: what to do & weather toward end of March

My wife %26amp; I will be in Yudanaka for a day and a half in March. Obviously going to the park to see the snow monkeys but what else is there around the area and what weather can we expect at this time of year? We will be sending our luggage ahead to Tokyo rather than taking it all with from Kyoto but what do we wear; jeans, boots and cold/wet weather gear? Do not want end up taking too little or too much.

Have been told that the Hokusai museum is not too far away in Obuse but I cannot find it on the internet.

Hi, Leas-Cliff,

Obuse info

If you have time for lunch, be sure to visit ';Chikufudo.'; They specialize in chestnuts. The Kuri-Okowa is sticky rice with chestnuts. Get the set-to that has a bit of this and that. It%26#39;s very nice.

Take the Nagano Dentetsu train from Yudanaka to Obuse.

If you get the express, it%26#39;ll take only 22 minutes.

Even by local, it%26#39;s less than 30 minutes.

It%26#39;s a 12 minute walk from the station to the museum.

And be sure to write a review!

Wear layers. Usually, the end of March is the end of snow time, but one never can tell. Spring is coming early -- so far. Check the weather channel!

Happy trails!

Thanks everyone. My wife (the artistic one) is looking forward to visiting the Hokusai museum. However, I don%26#39;t know about the Chestnuts though as they have never been in my list of favorites but my wife loves them!

Is there much to do in Yudanaka - do we need walking boots? There is not much in the travel books or on the internet and I get the impression, rightly or wrongly, that the area goes under two different names.

Yudanaka is the name of the train station and the area right around it.

It%26#39;s located in a greater area called ';Yamanouchi'; which encompasses the monkey park, ski resorts and other onsen areas.

Be sure click on ';Zeno%26#39;s Guide.'; His site is quite comprehensive. http://www.yudanaka-shibuonsen.com/

There%26#39;s a video at the bottom of this site. Scroll all the way down! http://yudanaka-onsen.info/

And another site in English that might be helpful.

You%26#39;ll still find snow on the ground in March. If it%26#39;s not white, it%26#39;ll be wet and slushy! So come prepared with waterproof and warmth! You%26#39;ll need a hat, gloves and a warm coat. If it%26#39;s sunny, a pair of sunglasses will be a must!

Have fun!
