will this work?

Hi!!

We%26#39;re leaving for japan in 3 weeks time and we%26#39;re still planning it all!!

We%26#39;ve got an itinerary sort of planned but we%26#39;re not sure if we%26#39;re being too adventurous or moving around too much.

So here it is....

Day 1: Arrive Osaka

Day 2 Osaka

Day 3 Hiroshima

Day 4 Kyoto

Day 5 Kyoto

Day 6 Nagano

Day 7 Nagano

Day 8 Hakone

Day 9 Tokyo

Day 10 Tokyo

Day 11 Leave tokyo

We were planning on staying at each of these places but were wondering if any of them are near each other that we wouldn%26#39;t need to keep moving accommodation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for travelling between each of the places? Is a japanese rail pass a good idea?

We%26#39;ve tried looking at sites for train times and length of journey etc but got a little confused and wasn%26#39;t sure what we were looking at!!!

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Osaka and Kyoto are very close to each other. About 30 minutes by train. Consider basing yourself in one of the cities and taking day trips to the other.

I would probably stay in Osaka for the first couple of nights, then spend the next two in Kyoto. If you like to go out at night you won%26#39;t have to worry about catching trains to to get back to your hotel. If you do opt for the railpass, you could activate it your last day in Kyoto and head to Hiroshima, which is 2 hours away by Shinkansen. You could use the pass to head back up to Nagano, to Hakone and up to Tokyo. (What are you doing in Nagano, BTW?)

Hi,

Thanks for your responses.

If we go to Osaka, Kyoto and then Hiroshima, do you think we should spend the night in Hiroshima or go straight on to Nagano? We are planning on seeing the snow monkeys there.

Also do think we should spend the night in Hakone, or visit from Tokyo?

We are slightly worried about moving around quite a bit with all our luggage.

Can you recommend any easy to understand websites that show us the various train ticket prices so we can work out what would be best for us?

Thanks again!

Google Hyperdia, add in your routes %26amp; it will show train fares.

A night in Hiroshima would be a good idea, as it is nice to see the night face of a city as well. And you won%26#39;t have to rush to get up to Nagano. Dunno what you%26#39;ll be doing in Hakone so I can%26#39;t recommend on staying the night there or not...

Do travel light, as there are heaps of stairs to contend with in Japan. For 3 weeks a large backpack or a small suitcase on wheels plus a daypack will be sufficient.

Thanks. We wanted to go to Hakone for the views and the onsen.

Do you think we have covered most of the main places or have we missed something?

Can you recommend any good value accommodation in any of these places?

I created a little list with general prices for things in Japan, and if you scroll down to the accommodation section, there will be links for hotels and also onsen. Here it is

Consider sending your luggage ahead via luggage forwarding service. Your hotel can arrange this. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2278.html

Your moving around doesn%26#39;t look all that bad in my opinion. Sometimes to enjoy a city properly, staying overnight is a good idea. You may opt for one more night at Osaka instead of Hiroshima, where you can easily reach from Osaka via a day trip. The night at Hakone should be spent at an onsen ryokan. Nagano should be done with a day trip to Matsumoto and perhaps Karuizawa. Alternatively, consider replacing Nagano with Takayama and Shirakawa-go.

At a minimum, using a 7-day pass from day 3 to day 9, you should come out slightly ahead.
