Day Use Onsen near Tokyo?

I%26#39;m going to be in Tokyo for about a week next month and I%26#39;d like to hit a couple of hot springs baths while I%26#39;m there - as an anime fan with a bad back, this is relevant to my interests. I thought I%26#39;d hit Tanzen on my short trip to Hakone, but can anyone recommend a nice onsen with day-use option within an hour or so of Tokyo by Shinkansen or local JR line? I%26#39;m considering the Oedo ';Theme Park'; onsen - it does sound hokey, but maybe for a gaijin on his first trip that%26#39;s not a bad thing? I wouldn%26#39;t mind something a little more scenic and low-key, however. Thanks for the help.

Day Use Onsen near Tokyo?

You are aware that most of them are communal(gender separated), which is usually a larger pool or outdoors. Other types are time reserved private, less common or in-room, expensive. So you will need to decide which type based on the budget.

Communal is fine - that%26#39;s what I%26#39;m expecting.

If you want a day use onsen, Kisenso is rated high along with the Green Plaza(more expensive but Mt. Fuji view in a clear day), Fujiya, etc.

There are so many ryokans/hotels and the day use info. is usually in Japanese. You can use onsen usually 12pm-3pm and many have s onsen+lunch package.

You should be ok at Oedo Onsen Monogatari. Its very popular with Japanese. Think onsen theme park.

This is a nice place I have been to near Narita airport a few times. Cheap and gaijin friendly. Has indoor and outdoor baths, nice view of rice fields. Also massage available (so so - for that to to Shiatsu Room at Omotesando crossing)

Remember, most onsens refuse service to anyone with a tattoo.

You might try the public onsen bath in Hakone:

Hi,

I think you%26#39;re thinking of Tenzan. It%26#39;s a nice onsen for day use with outdoor baths. They also have a nice ryokan nearby if you want to spend the night.

The site%26#39;s all in Japanese, but it has pictures. :-) http://tenzan.jp/index.html
