Shinagawa

I am planning to go to Tokyo in the beginning of May for 12 days and found a reasonably good deal on expedia for Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa. Has anyone stayed in Shinagawa before? If so, are there places to go out at night or how easy it is to get back to hotel from Roppongi or Shinjuku if decide to go out there late at night?

Shinagawa

Depends on how late at night you are talking about. Rail and subway lines shut down sometime between midnight and 1:00am.

JR Yamanote Line goes from Shinjuku to Shinagawa and it%26#39;s very convenient. From Roppongi, there are different options to go back to Shinagawa but transfers are required.

For train times and schedules, check out http://www.hyperdia.com.

A late-night taxi from Roppongi to Shinagawa costs around 2,000 Yen. From Shinjuku, it%26#39;d cost 4,000.

Shinagawa

I%26#39;ve stayed in Shinagawa (at the Strings Hotel) several times, and I like the area a lot.

I think it%26#39;s the best location in the city if you%26#39;re going to be traveling around a lot. It%26#39;s on the JR Yamanote line, which takes you, among other places, to Shinjuke, Tokyo station, Shibuya, Ikebukoro, Ueno, and many others. Plus, it%26#39;s on both the Narita Express line and the Shinkansen line to Kyoto.

Lots of restaurants in the area, as well as supermarkets where you can get meals to go.

You may already know the first week of May, called the golden week(http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2282.html)will be very busy travel time anywhere in Japan, so plan accordingly or delay your trip. Shinagawa is convenient for traveling to other tourist places outside of Tokyo but for night life and other touristy attractions in Tokyo, try Shinjuku, Roppongi, Shibuya, etc. so you don%26#39;t worry about late night expensive taxi rides.

thank you for your kind tips. will try booking this weekend if the deal is still on for the hotel in shinagawa. if not, would you recommend any hotels in shinjuku, shibuya, roppongi for approximately the same price, around 90GBP per room per night?

Kapite,

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Takanawa Prince many times, obviously satisfied. Try to stay in the older section, referred to as such, with a real Japanese garden. Ask for the garden view.

Prices have dropped if you go by travel sites like Orbitz. I%26#39;ve been paying well over $100 but notice them down below $90 (a 4-5 star hotel).

Food and drink prices are probably still high if you patronize the hotel so cross the street to the station side for great food and drinks. Try the New York Deli in the station for a great breakfast under $10. The station is central to everywhere.
