If it is your first trip to Japan, base your itinerary around the most popular (they are the most popular for a good reason!) areas - basically Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka/Nara to Hiroshima. Can you fly into Tokyo and out of Kansai (or vice versa)? Have you investigated puchasing a JR Pass? Use the internet to book your hotels...and TripAdvisor reviews are a very good indication of where to stay. Japan is a %26#39;gentle%26#39; travel destination - don%26#39;t run around like a madman (or like some other recent TA Australian enquirers!)...just allow time to soak in all the interesting things you%26#39;ll discover as you turn the next corner...you can always return a second time to explore more of this fascinating country.

The first week of May is right in the middle of Golden Week, one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan. If you can change your plan, I recommend doing so. See:
